The Catholic Church is preparing to mark 100 years since the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima to three shepherd children in Portugal in 1917. Pope Francis will be visiting Fatima in May and has granted a Plenary Indulgence for those who participate in this anniversary.
St. John Cantius Parish will be joining the celebration with a series of significant events and presentations to help Chicagoans understand and live Our Lady’s message of prayer, penance, and peace. The events are sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima and Relevant Radio.
The celebration of 100 years of Fatima will include every 13th of the Month from May to October as the parish will host a presentation and host an outdoor candlelight Marian Procession. The events will conclude on October 13th, the 100th anniversary of the “Miracle of the Sun” with a Pontifical High Mass celebrated by Bishop Joseph Perry and a sermon by Relevant Radio’s Fr. Francis “Rocky” Hoffman.
Last year on August 27, thousands processed down city streets in a historic procession that closed Chicago Avenue as the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was carried by members of the Chicago Police. This year as we observe the 100th Anniversary of such a significant moment in our church we welcome all, Catholic and non-Catholic alike to come and experience the meaning of the message of Fatima.
Now, more than ever, our city and world is in serious need of help as people wander weary through life searching for meaning and truth. But there is that peace that Our Lady can bring to our city through the Fatima message of living the gospel every day.
